How to Train Livestock Guardian Dogs - Training the Black Alder Pups Series Begins!

Updated: Sep 16, 2023

It was a lot of work for the puppies to travel from Idaho to the ranch!

The backstory

On July 5, 2023, my dear friend Debi Reid, of Black Alder Ranch in Idaho, was blessed with a litter of six Maremma puppies. Their sire and dam are dogs born here, so I have quite an attachment to this litter!

Debi was the Maremma Sheepdog Club of America President for many years. I had the privilege of working with her when I was on the board. She is ethical, and wise, and believes in excellence. Fully committed to the welfare of this litter, she sent them to me for several months of training. What fun for me! They will also have their PennHIP testing while they are with me. Lucky, lucky buyers, and lucky pups.

I wish it was common for breeders to work this hard for their pups and their buyers; it isn't. Not even close. So, I am going to share this journey with you.

What's coming

The litter came to me at nine weeks of age: three males and three females. They will be in training with me for several months. This is the beginning of the training series about them. I will use this project to create a video and blog post library that will allow others to use what we learn with this litter to train their own LGD pups.
