My LGD Training Manual - Published on Amazon!!!

Updated: 4 days ago

This was quite a day for me. I am proud of this!

The Foundations course is on sale at 20% off for the month of January!

After nearly a year of writing and working with my editor, drawing from years of experience with 250+ Maremmas, this training manual is finally finished and was officially published on Amazon on November 17, 2021.

This is Kathy holding what we believe is the first copy of the training manual sold through Amazon. Her collaboration helped make this project a success.

Prior to publication on Amazon, the training manual was available from my website; at least 50 copies were sold. This manual is not a stand-alone product. It is written to accompany the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Foundations course as those principles apply to LGDs. What this means to me is that possibly 50 LGD owners have completed this incredible course. They are much more likely to be successful with their LGDs because of this, and their dogs are safer! Advocating for LGDs is my driving passion. Through science-based education, owners learn that the days of dangle sticks and shock collars are archaic "training" tools of the past.

This is what the introduction to the manual says on Amazon:

This manual accompanies the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Foundations course and suggests adaptations to the course material to optimize it for the training of livestock guardian dogs. It acts as a bridge from the material in the course to the specific characteristics and needs of LGDs. It was created with the permission of the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA).

The manual includes real-life examples of how to use the new training skills you will learn in the course to your advantage with LGDs and identifies some of the potential pitfalls of improper training of LGDs.

The author draws on her extensive experience breeding and training Maremma Sheepdogs as working LGDs, as well as her experience as a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner.

The Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Foundations course is written with the companion dog owner in mind. However, the training science presented in the course is used in zoos and marine mammal settings around the world. And just as training is adapted to the characteristics of different species—you wouldn’t generally train a pet cat with alfalfa pellets nor a donkey with pieces of steak—there are some necessary adaptations of the material related to the differences in pet dogs and livestock guardian dogs. This training manual, used with the KPA course, will substantially increase your likelihood of success with your LGD!

A few words from Ken Ramirez

Cindy has written a very useful guide that helps those who work with livestock guarding dogs use the positive reinforcement techniques taught in the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Foundations course more effectively. She guides the LGD trainer through appropriate use of positive reinforcement techniques with these magnificent and unique working dogs.

I am very proud to have Ken's endorsement of this project. He owned one of my Maremmas for several months and has visited my dogs here at the ranch, so he has a first-hand understanding of what is true for LGDs. When I sent him one of the early drafts of the manual, he honored me by featuring me on an international KPA broadcast:

International LGD Broadcast Featuring Benson Maremmas and Cindy Benson:

The training manual is interactive, in that I will answer questions students have through blogs listed on the KPA & the LGD Training Manual - Q/A on my website. When students email me with questions, I answer their questions in blogs written for them. In that way, their questions and my answers can be shared with others.

My Training Manual as Interactive:

The "KPA CTP" after my name as the author of this manual means Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner, awarded to me after my completion of KPA's rigorous professional dog training course in July 2020. I am the only KPA certified dog trainer who specializes in the training of LGDs. I am listed on the "Find a Trainer" page. This has allowed me to connect with LGD owners all across the country through Zoom training sessions.

Karen Pryor Academy Spotlight Trainer of the Month:

I hope you'll check out the course and the training manual. If you have any questions, please just let me know!
