This training session was soooo much fun!! After the girls had finished with the leash training we didn’t have a lot of puppy left. It was hot outside and they were getting sleepy so we knew we had to come up with a new task quickly or we wouldn’t have awake puppies to play with.

I teach our pups to climb ramps for a variety of reasons. Since they had seen these ramps in a previous novel stimulus training session the pups weren’t afraid of them. The pups had never been higher than 2’ off the ground though!

I set my camera up and then stepped into the stall to build our obstacle; I had puppies trying to climb the ramps before I even had them in place! The puppies all woke up and ran up and down our ramps with no concern at all. They stood on our grooming table and gazed around from this high place with great curiosity.

As you watch the videos please notice that we NEVER prompt the pups to participate. We don’t bribe or encourage them. We set up something new that the pups can choose to interact with, or not, and then click and pay them if they do. Remember, the click tells they what they are being paid for; it is a very important part of the training we do.

One of the first pups to climb the ramp made it to the bottom and stretched out and went to sleep. For the rest of the session every pup had to climb over him! It was very entertaining to watch.

Training shouldn’t be “serious.” We have learning adventures with the pups, and we learn as much as they do; we are partners with them on this journey as they mature and become ready to take on more and more.

Stay tuned for the next big changes....
